The Sirenland Writers Conference Presents — Under the Influence: Writers on Film

It would seem that modern literature has been much more heavily influenced by cinema than vice versa. ”   — Susan SontagJim Shepard Under the Influence

Some writers borrow explicitly and extravagantly from the films they have loved. With other writers, film is present in the rhythms and music of their prose. Either way, it’s nearly impossible to find a contemporary writer whose work has not been shaped by the experience of cinema.

UNDER THE INFLUENCE will bring some of world’s top literary figures to the screening room at the Crosby Street Hotel. Each writer will introduce a film that has influenced his or her work. The film will be screened, followed by a discussion with MICHAEL MAREN, a cocktail hour, and book signing.

Next up is Jim Shepard.

A number of the stories in Jim’s upcoming collection, you think that’s bad, feature obsessed and driven historical figures. Both Werner Herzog and Aguirre, fit that description as well.

PAUL AUSTER was the first writer in the series. He introduced William Wyler’s 1946 film THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES which features in the storyline of his latest novel SUNSET PARK.
